For hypothetical winter beaters, what is your local craigslist offering? Here’s some of mine:

!!! UNKNOWN CONTENT TYPE !!!

‘96 Monte, fairly clean, 215k, high idle. $975

!!! UNKNOWN CONTENT TYPE !!!

‘01 Avalon, luxury in decent shape, 300k, what can go wrong? $1800

!!! UNKNOWN CONTENT TYPE !!!

‘00 Park Ave, this is almost too nice to beat, but 277k miles. Priced right though, $1700

I expect these links to be kinja’d

Edit: damn kinja.

Oh sweet! It’s one of the rare 8 cylinder 3800 V6s!

You won’t find craftsmanship like that on just any Craigslist.

I don’t get winter beaters.

A beater is more likely to break than a newer, more expensive, well maintained vehicle. At the same time, the beater will also be less safe due to updated safety stuff on the newer vehicle.

When travelling in cold weather, I want something that is less likely to break and also less likely to seriously injure me in an accident, not more so.

I’d rather take the higher risk of fender bender, road salt, etc. in something I don’t care about. It’s not a replacement car. If it fails you still have a functional car. If it breaks, it breaks. Likely to be an easy fix and if not, part it/junk it and get half your money back.

The Monte may be questionable with regards to safety, but the PA and Avalon would hardly be death traps. I’m not suggesting to buy something that is beaten into the dirt already.

Although there’s a MX-3 5speed for $500. Straight panels are overrated.
